Facebook is a social utility that connects people with friends and others who work, study and live around them. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, keep up with friends, upload photos, share links and videos.

Facebook was founded by Mark Zuckerberg with fellow computer science major students and his roommates Dustin Moskovitz and Chris Hughes while he was a student at Harvard University.

Website membership was initially limited to Harvard students, but was expanded to other colleges in the Boston area, the Ivy League, and Stanford University. It later expanded further to include any university student, then high school students, and, finally, to anyone aged 13 and over. The website currently has more than 175 million active users worldwide.

According to comScore, Facebook is the leading social networking site based on monthly unique visitors, having overtaken main competitor MySpace in April 2008. According to Alexa, the website's ranking among all websites increased from 60th to 7th in terms of worldwide traffic, from September 2006 to September 2007, and is currently 5th.

In September 2006, serious talks between Facebook and Yahoo! took place concerning acquisition of Facebook, with prices reaching as high as $1 billion.
